Is It Blushing, or Rosacea?
What some may consider a cute, blushing look can be a chronic challenge for those with rosacea. The symptoms of this very common skin condition can be covered up and managed in some cases, but in others, seeking treatment from a reputable dermatologist may be necessary. Understanding what rosacea is, its possible triggers, and treatment options helps reveal the mystery surrounding this noticeable yet often overlooked condition. One of the things about rosacea that concerns those who have it is not being able to control their skin’s response to certain factors, such as being embarrassed or having an alcoholic beverage. Because it often appears later in life, it can catch people off guard, leaving them wondering how to manage it.
Rosacea causes the skin to flush, but it can also remain red on the face. Enlarged blood vessels can fill with pus in some severe cases and can take months to go away completely. Rosacea is not acne, although it can often be mistaken for it. Because there is no known cure, people often look to their diets, environments, and identifying triggers can help manage the symptoms. However, in more severe cases, people will work with their local dermatologists to find effective treatments, which may be topical or involve a product line designed to treat rosacea.
Severe Rosacea Requires Dermatology Assistance
Anyone who suffers from severe and chronic rosacea may be dealing with symptoms that leave them feeling insecure and self-conscious. In severe cases, individuals may be dealing with visible veins, swelling, burning, eye issues, an enlarged nose, and red and bumpy skin on the face. If any of these symptoms are recurring, they can be easily treated by a dermatologist. There is no reason anyone should suffer from the discomfort and embarrassment of a flare up.
Common Triggers
Not knowing what triggers rosacea can be incredibly frustrating. The good news is that there is some evidence of triggers that are common among patients. In some cases, things can’t be avoided, but in others, it may be worth knowing what could cause a flare-up.
Spicy foods – foods containing curries, peppers, and other ingredients that cause spice in foods are a common trigger for those suffering from rosacea. Many people may experience a temporary flush when they eat spicy food, but rosacea can stay long after the meal is done. If the symptoms are painful or flare up badly when eating spicy food, it may be something worth skipping when you are out for a meal.
Alcohol – alcoholic beverages are a trigger for almost everyone who has rosacea. Sometimes it may be the mix, like a citrus-based mixer. Margaritas can cause rosacea-like symptoms in individuals who don’t have rosacea! Red wine, rich in tannins, is also a very common trigger, so if you want a glass of wine at dinner, maybe stick to the whites! Those who experience flare-ups when drinking alcohol should consume alcohol in moderation, track which alcohol causes reactions, and stick to those that don’t.
Stress – it is not a friend to your body or your skin. Along with rosacea, stress is connected to many skin condition flare-ups, so stress management is essential not just for your skin, but for your entire mind and body. Stress can be physical, emotional, or hormonal. Learning to manage stress through breathing, exercise, meditation, or listening to music can be easy to implement.
Sunburns – overexposure to the sun can cause visible signs of agitated skin in anyone, and for those with the skin condition, flare-ups can be more challenging to manage. Rosacea patients should use daily sunscreen and be mindful of sun exposure. The sun should not be a solution to “drying up” pustule bumps from rosacea. The sun’s rays are damaging and can create more problems later.
