5 Tips for Managing Oily Skin
It might be September, but that doesn’t mean we have completely escaped the heat of the summer season yet. In Atlanta, we can still expect hot and humid weather this month. And for those who suffer with oily or combination skin, the warmer weather can often make the problem even worse.
Instead of the dewy, glowy skin you dream about, you can end up with greasy, shiny skin that leaves you with breakouts and makeup bleed. While it might be impossible to completely eliminate oils spots, especially in the warm and humid weather, there are some steps you can take to manage the oil while still taking care of you skin.
5 Tips for Managing Oily Skin
Wash with an oil-free cleanser.
Don’t be afraid to wash your face when you are dealing with oily skin. Some people are under the misconception that washing their face or using gentle skincare products will increase oil production. Harsh products can strip your skin of the oils it needs to stay healthy and fight breakouts.
The key to managing oil is to use a gentle, oil-free cleanser that contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid helps absorb oil and creates a matte appearance. Some people also use witch hazel or a low concentration tea tree oil as a toner after cleansing to help restore balance and remove oil.
Keep your skin hydrated.
Adding moisture to already oily skin might sound counterintuitive, but oily skin can still be dehydrated skin. Dehydrated skin can result in dry, scaly patches, redness and irritation. Don’t shy away from moisturizers when you have oily skin. Instead, choose a light moisturizer that is oil-free and won’t clog your pores.
Remember that hydration also comes from the inside! Make sure that you drink plenty of water each day, especially in the high heat and humidity. When you are hydrated, your skin is healthier overall and may even produce less oil.
Simplify your skincare routine.
When you have oily skin, there is an urge to scrub and cleanse to remove the oil. However, this will usually lead to more skin problems, including dryness, breakouts and other irritations. The better route is to keep your skincare simple. Minimize the number of products you use to only those that are oil-free and non-comedogenic. Choose a good salicylic acid product and a light moisturizer, and avoid adding additional products to your regimen until your skin has had adequate time to adjust. This can sometimes take two weeks, so be patient.
Choose the right makeup.
If you wear makeup and have oily skin, you understand that sometimes the two just don’t work. When your t-zone is slick, your makeup can run or become cakey. Be sure that you choose makeup products that are formulated specifically for oily or combination skin. Look for foundations that are mattifying or semi-mattifying. You may also find that using a lightweight primer before applying your foundation can help control oil and shine throughout the day.
Use oil blotter tissues.
One common reaction to oily skin – add more powder! While this might soak up the oil for a short time, it will inevitably come back, requiring you to apply even more powder an hour or two later. The constant application of powder can cause your makeup to become cakey and, when mixed with sweat and oil, can even clog your pores and lead to breakouts.
Instead of applying powder, try blotting tissues. These tissues come in thin, convenient sheets that can easily be stored in your makeup bag or purse. They readily absorb oil without leaving any powder or residue behind.
Oily or combination skin is a common skin concern for people of all skin tones. By following the tips above, you can manage the oil while avoiding other skin issues such as dryness and acne.
